A little background: I edit with MiniDV footage and use MiniDisc for occasionally audio-only interviews. In my old machine (Windows with Adobe Premiere Pro) I used a PCI M-Audio Audiophile 2496. Unfortunately, it’s not compatible with my newly ordered MacPro, so I have to get a new audio card.

I’ve looked at the M-Audio Firewire solutions, but at around $500 I’m wondering if I might want to get into a higher priced audio/video capture card, even though I don’t utilise a high-end deck (although ultimately I’d love to get something like the Panasonic AG-DV2500). I’ve looked at a couple options (AJA IO) which we have at work, but I fear there might be a lower-priced solution for my needs, so once again I turn to the knowledgeable Cow community.

What i’m looking for in terms of input/output is the following: Voicework (XLR in); Audio Monitor (XLR out); Video Monitor (Component/S-Video Out); Mindisc (Coaxial Digital In/Out); DVD Recorder (Component In/Out) and VHS (Composite In) … I will use Firewire for input/output of my MiniDV footage. I also have a Phonic MM502 mixer.

If i’ve missed any key piece of info, forgive me as the actual setup of an edit system is not really my strong point. My budget would ideally be under $1000, but a little over I could still do (read not over $1500 pre-tax).

As always, any help and/or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

You could get a Kona LSe (if you only need SD). The only problem is that you will need a coax to AES converter such as the Flying Cow or similar.

If you are looking for strictly audio input, I have heard folks talking about a good Mackie audio board with Firewire input to a computer.

As Jeremy suggests, you could get an AJA Kona LSe or a Kona LHe. Both have analog audio inputs with the major difference being that the LSe is Standard Definition video only while the LHe is SD and HD.

LSe has Balanced Analog Audio I/O as does the LHe.

Thanks Jeremy and Walter. The Kona’s don’t have Coax Digital audio input/outputs for my MiniDisc, but I just realized the MacPro itself has digital audio in/out. Do I just go directly in and out to capture/playback to/from the MiniDisc from the Mac itself?

I know the digital is an input, not sure about it as an output.

In theory this should work just fine as you simply select the Audio Input in the System Preferences. I would certainly just try this before you go out and buy anything else. Then if it doesn’t work the way you want to, THEN explore additional hardware for your system.

No sense buying something you don’t need.
