    Matt,

aiff at 48khz is native in FCP. Always try to stick with that.

Music CDs are typically recorded at 44.1khz however, which should still play just fine in FCP nonetheless.

David, thank you, that is very helpful. The audio I’m importing is actually of an interview that was transferred to CD from tape, not music. Would it still be at 44.1 khz, and do the same parameters apply?

    Thanks again,
    Matt

I believe, generally, camcorders record 16-bit 48Khz. So if the person who burned the CD for you captured the audio from the tape and burned it directly to CD, it should be 16-bit 48KHz, but you can check by bringing the audio file into iTunes, select the track, press Apple + I. That will bring up the information about the audio clip.

Robert, I apologize for not being more specific in my reply to David’s answer. The interview that was transferred to CD was originally on analogue tape, the interview is from 1981. Do you know how this might change my handling of such media, if at all? On the other hand, your answer (which was informative, thank you) is a perfect lead in to another question I had. Is there a program better suited than Itunes for getting media onto the hard drive from a CD before importing it into Final Cut?

    Thanks again,
    Matt

Hi Matt, if you have FCP, you should also have Compressor installed – it’s a very useful tool for such situations and relatively easy to use.

If you drag and drop your audio files from your CD, you could batch re-encode them as AIFF 48k/16bit for editing use in FCP.

Oops, sorry I didn’t get back to you Matt, but I’ve been offline for a few days. Kai gave you a good working solution however.
