Which 3D package best with After Effects
Before setting off on the journey to fully explore 3D, can one of the gurus please point me in the right direction? Everybody knows of the need of real 3D with After Effects, the best way to implement this is probably to use an external 3D package… but which is best? And user-friendly enough for an AE boffin to be able to learn quickly? C4D, Maya or Lightwave? Will it be posiible to point out the pro’s and cons of each and the best option?
Also: In which package will it be easiest to import and export AE camera settings?

Standard Disclosure: if you ask on any software-specific forum you will probably get the answer that that forum’s software is best.
That said … C4D is the best choice. 🙂 First, LW is kind of a dinosaur. It’s still a capable program, but it’s Modeler/Layout bifurcation is sooo old school. Development has been at a crawl compared to other 3D apps.
Anyway, I think that C4D has a much shorter learning curve than Maya or LW. It also has better integration with AE. You can set up Cinema so that it will automatically output cameras, lights, motion data, and render passes and have them open up in AE with all the layers properly arranged and with the correct transfer modes. It is possible to import AE’s camera data, but it’s a bit of a hack.

Thanks Adam, I also had another confirmation that C4D is the way to go. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction – now for those tutorials…
