  • where to store media editing animatics

I am starting an animatics job and had a couple of questions. Where is the best place to store all of the media (the story board panels and voice record)? I read that non-timecode media should go in the project folder but in this case there will be a lot of media so I wasn’t sure if this was the place. I will also be sending it to an Offline editor afterward. I have mostly used FCP to capture DV footage that went into the Capture Scratch folder so this is a new situation for me. I would appreciate any help.

I usually keep it on my media drive inside the capture scratch folder in the project folder there. That way I can archive all the project’s media easily since it’s all in the same place.

Thanks for the reply John. Do you mean you create folders inside the capture scratch folder for separate projects?

I point FCP to my large raid as the capture scratch drive. When I look inside the capture scratch folder there’s a folder for each project. I make folders inside those project folders for graphics, DVD project, or whatever. Of course your captured or transferred clips are in there, too.

Thanks again John. One last follow up, if I were to do that too, when time to transfer the project would I just need to give them the project file and that folder-would that keep the links?

As long as the path to the clips is exactly the same it should work. That means name the capture drive the same on both systems and all the folders in the same relative place with the same names. Make a simple project with a couple of clips and send it along for the other editor to try. Better to figure that out early in the process.
