  • Where is the capture bin stored on the computer?

Posted by Mark Krueger on December 13, 2011 at 8:01 am

Using Vegas 10 or 11. I have captured some video from a DV source. It stores that video in “capture bins” I have included a screen shot of what I am referring to.

I cannot seem to find where on the computer it is saving those files.
The files are put in the media bin of the project once they have been captured, but I want to know where they reside in the computer.

    Anybody know?

They go into whatever folder VidCap tells them to (Options – Preferences – Disk Management).
I change this for each new project that I have to capture tape=based video.

Thanks Mike, That is a good idea to change this for each project, I will do that in the future.

    You’re welcome Mark.
Before I made the switch to SD cards, a separate capture folder inside of my project folder was something I always did and I highly recommend it for all projects.
Now that I’m using SD cards, I still have a “capture” folder inside my project folder.
Amongst other things, it makes project backups a lot easier.

Mike, Can you briefly tell me how you are using your SD cards. I am still struggling with organization and getting things backed up. You can image that because I did not know about the ability to change the saving destination of the captured video, All of the captured video I have done so far is in my documents and they are all mixed together! What a mess!

I have begun to make a new folder for each project with imported media, but the captured video is not there, I will now know how to do that. Thanks again. Mark

Mark, my new work cameras are JVC HM750s and use 32 GB. SDHC cards.
They record in either mp4 or mov format and I prefer mp4 simply because I have a PC, not a Mac 🙂
When I get back from my shoot, I plug the card into a USB reader, run XDCAM EX Explorer ClipBrowser and save the files to my “capture” folder inside of my project folder.
This free utility rewraps the mp4 files to MXF format which Vegas loves and edits very smoothly.
Is this a necessary step? Could I edit the native mp4 files?
I probably could but, as I said, Vegas handles MXF files very nicely so I’ll keep doing it this way until my boss buys me a monster computer which will handle any format ever known in the video world 🙂
