Where do I start? AE, AI, PS?
Hi guys,
I’ve had Adobe CC for a few months now but I’m kind of scared of it as I’ve been trying to port over from FCPX but never have the time to learn Premier and AE because I’m too busy with jobs!
However, I REALLY want to make the transition because I like how all the apps ‘plug in’ and I just like Adobe’s approach. Apple have been dropping the ball recently IMO with FCPX (although there are things I love about it, and would miss).
As a filmmaker and documentary photographer, I want to start improving my creative side beyond just the image. I want to start venturing into typography, motion graphics, and really get better at doing better titles for videos etc.
Design is really not my strong point, but I’m willing to learn.
I look at what I’d want to do with say AE and titles and Photoshop etc, and it’s all about adding visual design to my productions – doing things a little more edgy.
The problem is I don’t know where to start. The destination I seek is to be good with AE and PS, but I feel like I need to start with AI first? Even though video is the ultimate output of my work, should I be looking at AI to learn how to create things from scratch?
I know so little about PS, and practically nothing about AE and AI.
Also, do any of you have advice, or books to read etc for someone who wants to learn the fundamentals of design, but hasn’t got a clue where to start?
Any advice you could offer please, would be gratefully received!

You can create a lot of vector graphics in After Effects without ever going into Illustrator, so I don’t think that you necessarily need to start with Illustrator first.

You may also want to start out with, for example, Photoshop, from the standpoint of things that you already know as a photographer and videographer – composition, camera setup, exposure and darkroom technique. You’ll also find a wealth of stuff on tv.adobe.com:

There’s a channel for just about anything you want to know, and digesting it in small packages, then applying it, is a great way to learn.
