Where do I get an unbalanced XLR to Mini-Jack adapter?
Some explanation at the outset …
I just got a RE50 mic for use with the Zoom H2. Naturally I needed a Female XLR to Mini Jack adapter cable. However, I was unable to get any sound out of the mic when connected (that is, the Zoom’s internal mics would not disable when the thing was plugged in). I tested the mic elsewhere and it was working fine. I then tried to run it into the mic-in port on my computer and record myself with Audacity and it produced a terrible hissing sound.
On the mini-jack end of my cable there are two green rings which, I think, means it’s balanced. Do I need an unbalanced cable and, if so, where would I find one at? I’ve looked high and low and can’t seem to locate one.

Hello Zan and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.
You have a mono source going into a stereo input. The mic is balanced. The input is unbalanced.
So you need a cable with the connections wired to do connect the + pin of the RE50 to the tip and ring of the plug so the audio goes to both left and right H2 inputs. You can use a cable that’s wired to port audio to just one track of the H2, but I think you’re better served to record to both.

In the links you provided I notice there are price ranges from $12 to $56 … is there any particular technical advantage to me going with the $56 one over the $12 one?

the $56 one has a block capacitor to keep bias voltage from getting into a mic or whatever you have plugged in on that end. I don’t know if the Zoom generates bias voltage.

I have a question:
I want to buy Zoom H2 and Azden SGM-X1 mix. I noticed some people buy XLR adapters, like this one:
