Hey Guys, I need to buy an HD camera asap. I want to buy a new varicam but I’m worried that in a couple of months the new one will come out and I will lose a lot of money trying to sell the old one. I was told that panasonic has discontinued there tape based cameras and are going totally P2. With that said what do I do. I really would like variable frame rates and the HDX does not offer that. Will there be a new Varicam at NAB?
    Thanks Bobby

    P.S. I start shooting as soon as 2 weeks…

    Hi,

I seriously doubt panasonic is getting rid of tape. They just released the 900, thats tape based. What frame rates do you want to shoot? HDX900 does 24,25,30,50,and 60. It also does the blured frame 12fps thing, but I don’t think it will shoot actual 12fps. If there is doubt, buy a used Varicam. They can be had for anywhere from 27 to 30k.

    cheers,

    Nick

    Greetings to all:

I’m sure my collegaue Jeff Merritt will also chime in on this question (yet again)…. However, please let it be known that there will be no new VariCam announced, or shown, or demoed at the NAB in 2007, period. The current model camera, the AJ-HDC27H is a great camera and was completely updated, improved and redesigned only two years to meet the EU Rohs requirements. That camera continues to sell very well and will not be replaced for quite some time.

There will be some new P-2 basd cameras at the NAB, as well as the amazing AJ-HDX900 (yes, the DVCPRO HD tape based camera) we launched last year, but just to reitterate once again, no new VariCam.

Sorry to rant on, it’s just that this queston is a living in the movie Groundhog Day, it’s like Deja Vu all over again!

    Cheers!

    Hello All,

This question has come up several times over the past years and the answer is the same; NO NEW VERICAM this year. Steve Mahrer is quite right. We just don’t want to dink with a proven product that is so popular and we don’t want to dis our existing base of customers. Yes, there will be a new VariCam in a couple of years that is a leapfrog over existing technology. But for now, go ahead and make a lot of money in your business using one of the most popular HD cameras on the market today. \\By the way, we still sell a ton of these cameras.

    Hi Steve,

Will the next one be tape based?

More thinking about the life of a 1400 deck I am considering to replace my 1200.

My thought is that the VTRs will still have value in a P2 world; especially to archive finished shows and other valuable master materials. In the meantime the 1400 has some real cool features such as insets and assemble and built in Cine Gamma Correction that motivate the 1200A’s replacement.
