When to use 10-bit rendering
I’ve got a one hour film with XDCAM1080i50, HDV1080, HDV 720p25 and DV Pal in a ProRes422HQ timeline. I’ve been doing some testing with 10 bit versus 8 bit rendering in the video processing tab of the sequence settings.
If I use 8-bit, I get a lot more real time playback, my renders are much faster than 10-bit, but exporting reference movies takes much longer, and they are huge.
If I use 10-bit, timeline rendering takes longer and there is much more of it. On the other exporting a reference movie is quite fast (because I’ve rendered in the timeline), and the reference mov is comparatively quite small.
My thought is to cut using 8-bit, and switch to 10-bit whenever I have to send out an approval copy.
Is this feasible? Is there something esle I should consider? Or in is it 6 of one when all’s said and done?
The reason I’m exporting ref files is to send them to Compressor and then to DVD.
