  • When to add logging info to Canon 5D footage?

Posted by Jeffrey Buras on December 1, 2009 at 8:46 pm

When working with a Canon 5D, should I add logging info to my clips before or after I transcode to ProRes? I would think I would want that data in the files as soon as possible so that if I have to transcode again, that information is preserved in the original file. Am I being silly?

Here are my two proposed workflows:

    1) Import H.264 files into a Final Cut Pro project
    2) Review clips and add data about reel, angle, shot/take, etc.
    3) Transcode H.264 clips to ProRes using Compressor
    4) Import ProRes clips into a new Final Cut Pro project
    5) Edit

    1) Transcode H.264 clips to ProRes using Compressor
    2) Import ProRes clips into a Final Cut Pro project file
    3) Review clips and add data about reel, angle, shot/take, etc.
    4) Edit

There will be no framerate conversions.

Unless you need to go back to the FCP project with H264 files, I don’t see any advantage in the first workflow.

As you won’t be able to smoothly play in FCP until transcoded, I would find it easier to batch convert first and just bring the ProRes into FCP before adding reel & shot data.

Even though you intend to edit at 30p don’t forget to convert the audio to 48khz

Wow, Brandon. If this was already released, this would be exactly what I need. We’re shooting this weekend with an on-site editor, so it won’t help for this shoot but I’ll keep an eye on it for future projects. Thanks for the tip!
