When shooting for Vimeo HD is it best to do 720P
I know they like uploads to be in 1280×720, so it reasons that 720P would be the best way to go, correct?

720p 30fps progressive, H.264 around 5000kbps audio AAC 44.1 KHz stereo 128kbps (or maybe 192kbps).

i don’t mean converting, i mean the format chosen to record in in the camera.

I shoot 1080p30. Then encode as I mention above. What you do may depend on any other delivery methods you may also need.

yes, for some things. It seems if i’m shooting for Vimeo, who requires 1280×720, then it would be smart to shoot at same resolution. I guess i’m answering my question.

…I usually shoot 1080 30p, you can “re-frame” your composition to 720p if you want (pan-crop) without degradation (or leave it 1080), and you also have the 1080 extra resolution for other projects….

I have asked this question as a new topic, but as I have been digging through older similar topics I came upon this one where you state you normally shoot 1080 30p.I am new to HD shooting and just finished my first shoot of a talking head. I decided to do some sample exports (I use PPro CS4). Every format I have exported to (H.264,QT. FLV/F4V,etc.) has very pronounced motion trails that are not there when I view the original footage. I have tried output settings of 29.97 and 30. Can you point me to some tutorials that will help me resolve this? I have been Googling all day and read a lot of posts, but no one seems to have any complaints about excessive motion trails on exports.

You shouldn’t be getting motion trials unless you’ve got something going on in your encoder settings. You wouldn’t happen to have a “motion blur” setting turned on in export would you? Another possibility is that you have a deinterlace filter turned on. Having that out when your source is progressive can cause some very odd issues.
Shooting progressive is idea for web so 29.97p source output as 29.97p shouldn’t have any temporal motion issues.
