When rendering the footage before exporting the aspect ratio appears to change.
I import 16 by 9 footage (1920 by 1080) and then I interpret the footage as such (square 1.0 pixels). When looking at the preview monitor it is fine, but when I render the footage, it puts bars on the top and bottom of the newly rendered footage.
I haven’t had this issue before, so I know/assume I changed or am missing something. The sequence size matches the footage, and the pixel aspect ratio matches too.
What am I missing?

Well, that’s the thing. I haven’t even exported yet. However, is that the issue?
It is Canon DSLR footage and when I went to check the export settings now, I noticed the source footage was 8 pixels short of the 1920 by 1080 on the height, but I’m sure that doesn’t factor in.
Anyway, it is h264 – video is the square aspect ratio 1.0. So it’s consistent wherever I look. That being said, should interpret the footage as widescreen then? Again, it looks fine importing, looks fine color correcting, but when the bar turns red and I attempt to render, it renders, and then compresses the height.
I never thought about the export settings though…

when does the bar turn red.
dslr footage shows yellow.
make a new sequence by dragging a clip into the new item icon.

What is your preview codec in the sequence settings?

Unfortunately, now I cannot recreate it! I shut down my computer for a little bit and now when accessing the same projects and footage, I cannot cause that to happen again.
I adjusted the settings for the preview recently but now I cannot even recreate that, no matter what preview I choose in the sequence settings.
Thanks for the assistance everyone. I apologize. I am going to go under the assumption that maybe it was an incorrect dimension entered under the preview field. It’s the only thing that makes sense at this point.

To anyone who assisted me or anyone reading this who ran into a similar issue I determined it was the export settings as has been suggested. For this project it was set to DV. I. changed to uncompressed and it worked great.
