When is the next update for avid?

5.5 was released a few months ago; a little less than a year since 5.0 was released.

Avid does not publicly release time tables of future releases, but I’d fathom a guess and say by the end of year if we’re lucky for 6.0. Don;t know about you, but I’m jazzed: We know it will be 64bit, which means a hefty amount of re-writing of code, which means a great opportunity to improve features.

MC 3.0 – June 2008
MC 3.5 – March 2009 (9 months later)
MC 4.0 – September 2009 (6 months later)
MC 5.0 – June 2010 (9 months later)
MC 5.5 – March 2011 (9 months later)

Over the last three years avid has been putting out a new release every 9 months or so. If they keep to the same schedule we can expect MC 6.0 in time for Christmas or shortly thereafter.

However, MC 6 sounds like it will be a more substantial update (if the rumors about it being 64-bit turn out to be true) so I wouldn’t be surprised if we don’t see it until NAB 2012.
