I’m on PC. Did you try deleting your prefs file?

hoping someone is following this thread..
i have the same issue ..
on a PC, Illustrator CS5 .. have deleted my entire Adobe Illustrator CS5.1 Settings folder and had it regenerated .. but still can’t resize a drawn object without it distorting.

    text resizes fine, but
i have drawn a circle, using the outline color only, no fill.
i have added some effects .. blur and shadow.
if i try to transform to a smaller dimension (using % or bounding box handles), the circle becomes thicker
i have uploaded a visual showing this..

this is driving me crazy 🙂
    any suggestions appreciated.

    thank you

    Are you using a brush?
If so, expand before resizing, or in Preferences enable Scale Strokes & Effects.

    THANK YOU Vincent !

I already had ‘Scale Strokes & Effects’ checked..
but I unchecked and rechecked it .. and it works now.

I’m so thankful for forums like this, and people like you, who take the time to keep me from going more looney than I already am 🙂

    thanks again !

I had this problem. The answer is very simple. What is happening is that you have ‘snap to pixel’ activated for your object. when you scale up or down, the points in the objects are snapping out of position to the nearest pixel. switch the snapping off and itll be ok again.

I am still having this problem. I’ve turned off snap to pixel grid. I’m using CS6 on mac. I have no strokes or effects. I’ve tried it with/without scale strokes effects and still get distortion. Any idea what’s going on? I don’t ever seem to remember having this problem before cs5…

I have the same problem with CS6 too. I figured out the temporary fix, is to restart illustrator, and the problem is gone.
