When I downconvert uncompressed 4:2:2 23.98 HD to NTSC 23.98 to make the file size manageable for offline I cannot playback the footage on the FCP timeline without rendering. When I playback uncompressed HD 23.98 with the presets set to 1080 23.98 no rendering is needed. I have tried setting the sequence, playback, and capture presets to uncompressed NTSC at 29.97, 23.98 with a variety of codecs. Any ideas on how to improve the workflow. All the rendering is a bummer just to play the clips in realtime. Using FCP 5, Tiger, 2.5 Gig dual G5, 8 gigs of ram, Decklink HD Pro dual link card, Fibre channel to S-Two disk array.

Seems to me that your workflow would be better if you captured the video as NTSC instead of HD… Then no renders would be needed. You can do this with a sony machine’s down convert or with the blackmagic card, no? Then for online, only capture what’s used in the sequence after managing it with the Media Manager.
