Of course, there’s always Apple, depending on your budget… They do have some of the best machines out there.
On the PC side, I think, right now Dell is still a brand to go to for in high end systems, unless you decide to spend a little time and build it yourself.
HP is quite lazy on the driver side (online), so until they get on the ball I can’t recommend them anymore. They seem to drop support and updates as soon as their machines are out… And we all know you’ll want to wipe out a system as soon as you get it to get rid of all the junk, so you’ll need that online support for drivers.
I can’t recommend a particular model (it will probably be discontinued by the time I finish typing this line)
The recommended OS is Win 7 64 bits. An i7 processor is also the way to go. The price range for that processor does go from mid to very high, very high not getting you much bang for those additional bucks…
RAM: Probably at least 8 Gigs (DDR3). Even more if you are going to use After Effects.
For HD editing you’ll have to keep some room in your budget for a RAID system, either 0 or 5. A couple more drives, one for OS, one for backup.
Graphics: Again, depending on what you will be doing, a cheaper card may work just fine. We are happy with the AMD/ATI Radeon 4870 at this time (we got the ones from ASUS).
And don’t skip the audio, there are a lot of offering out there. M audio is great if you are doing more advanced editing. Just keep in mind that most onboard audio in usually the worst and most neglected component in the system.
I think that’s it, happy shopping!
