  • What’s the main difference between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio?

Posted by Aminul Islam on May 25, 2012 at 7:25 pm

I have learned the very basics of Sony Vegas Pro 10. But recently I stumbled upon other Sony video editing programs where I saw this Movie Studio. I checked the descriptions and they all looked kinda same.

My question is what are the basic or main differences between Vegas Pro and Movie Studio HD Platinum? Which one is perfect for what type of editing?

I’m trying to make professional videos (music videos, short films and such). Which one do you think is better for me? (Please don’t let this question shorten your answer to what are the main differences between the two products.)

Thanks. I’m hoping for a reply.

Movie Studio is a limited version of Vegas Pro. It only supports 10 tracks instead of Pro’s unlimited tracks and it only has two compositing modes instead of Pro’s 16 modes, and a bunch more;. You can read about it in Sony’s Product Comparison chart.

The Pro version that you are already using is more capable than the Movie Studio version so you should stick with Vegas Pro.

Hi John, Thank you for clearing that up! Your answer got me thinking what are compositing modes? I only know the basics of video editing and still learning Vegas Pro 10.

This recent Sony webinar should help explain some of the terminology.

There are several differences, but the reason i upgraded from movie studio, to Pro, is because I need Batch-rendering in my line of work

I am having major problems with sony movie maker 11.0. If I buy Movie Maker 13 can I transfer all unfinished movies and files
    over without losing any information?

The product is called Movie Studio and yes you can open Movie Studio 11 files with Movie Studio 13.

A couple of things to remember here. Once you’ve saved the file in 13, you can’t open it in 11 anymore. So make copies of your version 11 .vf files first before playing around with them in 13.
And (from v 13 release notes): “When using the 64-bit version of Movie Studio Platinum, third-party plug-ins will work only if they are 64-bit plug-ins. Please check with the plug-in vendor for available updates. You can share projects between 32- and 64-bit versions of Movie Studio Platinum installations, performing editing as needed in 32-bit Movie Studio Platinum and finishing the project in 64-bit Movie Studio Platinum.

Thanks for this reply. A related question: In the current Vegas Pro 13 Suite they say DVD Architect is included. Does DVD-A work optimally from within the suite or should I buy and use it separately?

DVD Architect Pro is a separate stand-alone program. There are templates in Vegas Pro to render to DVD Architect compliant formats and then DVD Architect will take the video and audio and allow you to author a DVD with menus. The “suite” is just a software bundle but the software is standalone.
