I was recently hired for my first wedding, and after editing all of the highlights together, and then exporting (I tried a few compression methods), I was left with an 11 minute high-def video that is 5GB in size. I’d like to post it online, so that I can get more gigs in the future, but no video site offers 5GB video uploads. I’d like to get the video down to 500MB, without losing any quality. What’s the best way to do this?

The only way I’ve gotten it that small was by changing the frame size to 320×180 (to keep the 16×9 ratio), but the video lost significant quality, as seen here:

Atom, you are right . . that is terrible quality . . you will not get many gigs with that demo . . in this day and age, you should be shooting HD for Blu Ray release . . view my vimeo clip here that I shot with my Sony EX3. I am an editor, not a cameran, but I think the camera work and lighting is acceptable:

    Brian,

I did shoot it in HD, and it looks just as good as your video…but when I compressed it, it made it look at the poor quality that you’re seeing. That’s why I’m asking how to make it so that it goes from 5GB to 500MB without making it look the way it does now. As an editor, can you please suggest an exporting method that would make it look nice still, while reducing the filesize significantly? I’m using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0.

Try exporting as H.264 at 1280×720 square, keep the bit rate around 7Mb/s 2 pass, and make sure maximum render quality is checked.

Hey Vince, thanks for your response…i don’t see an exporting option to set the bit rate to “7 mb/s 2 pass” like you said i should. i’ve taken a screenshot of my exporting option list. can you please take a look and tell me which things i need to change in order to get my file size around 500mb with good quality? appreciate any help you can give me! here’s the screenshot: https://i27.tinypic.com/jh3e3k.jpg

    Hi Adam,

Not sure what version of Premiere you’re on, but try picking H.264 instead of Quicktime as the file type if it’s available. That should give you more control over the settings.

    Otherwise, start at 75%.
