What’s the average image size for fast downloading

it’s more page total than per image and it also depends on your audience, the presentation at hand, etc. etc…very hard to give you a specific average, but i think these days anything over 100kb of non-cachable images on a given page is pretty big…

(but i’m a little old school, unfortunately)

not sure i’m following this – smaller is always better, but i suspect that you have something else in mind?

but yes – page total is key – if you have 75kb of images on every page (nav, etc), then you are much more tied up if you want to devote 40kb to a single image – but if you have 10kb of fixed content on every page then you certainly have more wiggle room as needed…

If my page has a total of 100kb imagery on it, is it OK to have one jpeg at 100kb or is there a faster download if I have four jpegs at 25kb each?

ahh – i gotcha. ya – it is typically better to break down larger images if possible, as the browser can then get them individually – even a progressive jpg still won’t render nice until done, so if you have smaller images then they will ultimately show up a smidge faster for users with a faster connection…
