What would you do? (removing 3 duplicate frames from a video pan)
Posted by Khashyar Darvich on September 5, 2012 at 7:42 amHi Everyone,
We are working on a feature documentary film that was partially shot on a Canon 7D…
On some of the pans filmed with the 7D, there is a strange glitch or error whereby occasionally the 7D recorded 3 duplicate frames, which makes the otherwise beautiful pan look jerky, or as if it stutters during the duplicated frames.
How would you remove the 3 frames so that the pan looks smooth?
We tried adding a short dissolve, and the ghosting looks odd.
We tried copying 2 frames on one side of the 3 freeze frames, and 1 copied from on the other side, but there is still a noticeable hesitation during the pan.
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

September 5, 2012 at 8:11 amOne possible solution, which may be an action of last resort, is to cut 2 or 3 seconds from the pan with a short dissolve, so that the dissolved clip ends aren’t close enough to look like a jump cut…
But, I would really like to find a way to save the entire pan (minus the 3 duplicate frames).
Thank you for your thoughts.

September 5, 2012 at 11:09 amAs I was searching online, another issue to bridge the gap if the three freeze frames were removed from the pan is to use a FCP morph plugin to recreate the 3 freeze frames (once the freeze frames are removed).
I also read that After Effects could recreate the frames, but I am looking for a way to do this within Final Cut.
Thank you for your thoughts and ideas.

September 5, 2012 at 12:28 pmif it has recorded three duplicate frames thus making the pan jerk, couldn’t you just remove two and close the gap?
or do you mean that the three duplicates take the place of the subsequent frames that should have been recorded?

September 5, 2012 at 5:43 pmHi Adam,
Thank you for your thoughts.
If I removed the 3 duplicate “freeze” frames from the middle of the pan and closed the gap, then it would create a jump cut, but perhaps it would look better than having the pan pause at the 3 duplicate freeze frames.

What you’re saying is that the camera dropped three frames and filled in the gap with the last frame it saw before resuming the pan. My first down and dirty fix is to put a motion map on the freeze frames to try to follow the pan. Next strategy would be to try to synthesize the three missing frames by morphing between the adjacent good frames. There are a few applications which offer some form of that.
Still a PITA.jPo

September 5, 2012 at 8:00 pmIs this problem in pans created by the recording crossing boundaries in the FAT32 file structure?
As far as a fix, what if you apply twixtor, which is a slomo frame interpolator, to the last good frames in and out? Otherwise, faking the three frames by doing a DVE move on it or painting three frames in photoshop is what I’d try next.

September 5, 2012 at 9:29 pmYes, that’s right Joseph…
Thank you for your feedback.
It’s a little disappointing to have the issue on otherwise stunning pans that were filmed with a crane 🙂
But, I do feel that the pans can be saved with the right technique to replace those 3 frozen frames.
Would you suggest a morphing plugin or program that works with FCP (as opposed to Motion).
Thanks again.

September 5, 2012 at 9:37 pmI appreciate your feedback, Mark.
I am not sure what caused the issue in the 7D footage. Although I have read that some other Canon 7D and 5D users have occasionally experienced the same issue.
It may have been caused by using some auto settings (instead of purely manual settings) in the camera, or… it may have been caused by using a shutter speed of 125 (instead of 60).
Thanks for the suggestion about Twixtor… Can you do a 3 frame SloMo shot with Twixtor using only two source frames?
Creating 3 frames in Photoshop would be time consuming, but worth the effort if nothing else works.
I have read that After Effects can do it, but I am trying to stay away from AE for this.
What do you mean by a “DVE” move? I’m sorry, I don’t know what “DVE” means.
Thank you again for your input and suggestions.
I feel more hopeful now than when we first saw the clips and I felt disappointed.

September 5, 2012 at 9:53 pmHi Joseph…
Regarding your idea of putting “a motion map on the freeze frames to try to follow the pan”…
Since the freeze frames are also full size (1920×1080), if you moved the positions of the freeze frames via motion mapping, what would you do with the resulting black areas that will appear in the area outside of the moved frames? You can’t really zoom in on the frames and still match the before and after non-freeze-frames.
Or perhaps I am not understanding what you are suggesting.
I appreciate your ideas and suggestions.

If there isn’t too much motion, it might be possible to cheat the black by adding a cloned layer below the primary shot and leave it in its default XY positioning….
