What to do? Switch to Vegas?

I switched from Media Studio 7 to Vegas 6 and have never considered upgrading Media Studio. I was too disgusted with the way Ulead treat their customers – they are still selling DVD Workshop, but haven’t had developers on the product for at least two years.

Vegas 6d is rock solid.
I think with an open mind willing to learn a different workflow…you will be amazed at how intuitive vegas really is.
Tools are where you’d expect them to be…everything is never more than 2 clicks away.
Let the program show you how to be efficient. Less time fussing and more time creating.
Many diehard avid, premiere friends of mine are using Vegas more and more for its fast (and pro) results.
The “Click count” is far less than competitors for the same result.!!! Almost 4 to 1
as we say in the audio world.

I first started with Pinnacle Studio. Then play’d around with Vegas 6 then 7, I’m now waiting for Vegas pro 8. Vegas has everthing you need now since having added a titler.

Those are all excellent questions.

I have been using Vegas for a number of years now on my home computer and it has been terrific. It is fast, flexible and after editing commercials professionally on Avid, I have found that Vegas provides a great, great home-system alternative.

Two things.

One, Vegas has a bunch of terrific features, but most of them require a fast computer. It makes a huge difference.

Two, I have just installed another 2 GB of memory to my system, bringing it up to 4GB. I think Vegas requires at least 2 and is much better with 4. The memory in your video card is important as well.

I think you can go to Vegas Pro simply because Vegas is also an easy system to learn and it’s very flexible. If you’re used to editing a certain way, it’s likely Vegas will allow you to continue to edit in a way you’re used to.

I’d say go for it.

Agreed. My quad core leaves my old P4 3.4 in the dust 🙂

2 GB of RAM is good but XP (if that’s what you’re running, won’t see 4 GB. AS I recall, 3 is the upper limit.

The memory in your video card is important as well.

Unless you’re running the full version of Magic Bullet and one of their specified video cards, a decent dual-head card is all you need.
More memory on the card is good if you’re a gamer but otherwise it has no effect (with the exception noted above) on Vegas’s performance.

How about Vista?

Is it worth it upgrading to Vista in order to utilize 4 GB of physical memory – and thus, make Vegas run a bit smoother?

Is there any way to use more within XP??

Vista is 32-bit so you still don’t see the whole 4 GB. max you could see is someting like 3.12 GB, and if you put a fat video card in there with lots of onboard RAM you may see even less.

You can use XP or Vista 64 and then the OS will see the whole 4GB. Vegas, still being a 32-bit application, will probably not be able to use more than 2GB, but the OS gets more RAM to play with so it’s possible that Vegas would actually get to use the whole 2GB.

As far as migrating to Vegas, a big issue for all such migrations is getting old projects into the new edit system.

I was a user of MSP7 and upgraded to MSP8. I got sick of all the crashes whenever I scrubbed the timeline. MSP8 was very unstable for me, not to mention that it is dying off and isn’t supported by Ulead anymore. I have been using Vegas 7 for over a year and upgraded to Vegas Pro8. Vegas is rock solid stable, it is really hard to even try to make it crash. The learning curve was very easy coming from MSP8. And the more you learn about Vegas, the more you wish you switched earlier. My editing is MUCH faster, no crashes whatsoever, I can do more, it’s easier, and any MSP user should really make the switch. You won’t regret it.

I still use media studio pro8. Corel customer service told me they are dropping it. I had already switched to vegas about 2 years ago. Use vegas 8 mostly with some help from msp8. There are still a few things that msp8 does quite well so it still generates income. At work I use MSP8,Premiere PRO CS3, Final Cut and Vegas.. .. Vegas is a great system to switch to.. You’ll figure it out.
