Ok so I have just installed CS5.5 Production Premium; and was going to start messing around with Premiere Pro.

All I have for capture presets are DV and HDV; according to the PDF primer for FCP editors you should be able to select ProRes if you have FCP installed.

Now we only have FCP 6, is that the issue?

How can I edit ProRes files natively in PPro (or at least setup a project correctly). Right now this is a no sell.

I use After Effects quite a bit and have never had problems with ProRes files importing or exporting (of course this was with CS4, maybe I am in for a rude surprise!)

    Hi Mark,

Unlike FCP which has about a gazillion project presets, Premiere is very open about what kinds of clips you drop into it. In other words, you can create a 1080i 29.97 sequence, and then mix and match ANYTHING into it! HDV, XDCAM EX, AVCHD, P2, HDSLR, ProRes, etc… Even different resolutions. I’ve even dropped 2K RED clips into my 1080i timeline.

So don’t look for a “ProRes” sequence preset, it’s not there because it’s not needed. Look for something that matches the resolution and frame rate that you need, or create your own preset. And then Import any clips that you have.

How do you create presets — I searched for something similar to AE’s Render and Output templates.

This whole FCP X mess is going to be the death of me. Do you know if the AJA IoHD will work at all with PPro? (at least as a output device)

    (and thanks for the reply.)

    Hi Mark,

I’m assuming that Mac shares the same setup interface as PC version 😉

    In New Sequence window, choose:

Sequence Settings > Sequence Presets > Settings > then look at the drop down for “Editing Mode” and choose CUSTOM. Make all your choices for frame size, frame rate, pixel aspect ratio, fields, audio settings, then SAVE PRESET.

As for IO HD, I checked https://www.aja.com/support/io/io-hd.php and it looks like it only supports FCP unfortunately.

    Thanks Jeff,

I will take a look tomorrow. Working on a project right now.

It wasn’t to hard to make a Pro res preset using Jeff’s notes.
As far as editing a pro res you can make new sequence from the prores
clip once imported and it will convert the sequence to prores much like
FC7 does when yo add a clip to a new sequence.
It doesn’t look like to me you can change the capture settings
to anything else except HDV & DV.
FC 7 allows you to capture HDV directly to Pro Res.

See this FAQ entry about choosing sequence settings.
