In a 60 second Q/A in HD Studio MagazineBob Scott, Varicam owner shoots the breeze…..

Q:Why is the variable-frame-rate feature of the VariCam so important?

A: ( Bob Scott answers ) I shoot a tremendous amount of sports with my VariCam, so acquiring in a high speed, for slow-motion effects, is very important to me. I wish there was a capability to go higher than 60 frames per second, like I have with my Arri SR3 film camera. [New software enhancements are coming from Panasonic at NAB 2006 that increase the frame rate options.]

Any knowledge in this group about a firmware/software upgrade pending for the Varicam and devices after it in the post process that achieves higher frame rates??

It’s been a little known fact that the Varicam is actually capable of “shooting” at a higher frame rate; the problem is recording it. The recorder is limited to 60 fps, so it’s conceivable that the higher frame rate could be ported to the HD-SDI output and recorder on some other metrhod, such as direct to hard disk? Until there’s a way to record it, it;s a moot point!

Folks: The title of this thread sums it up well…

The VariCam can image and record HD over a range of 1-60fps, but there is no means / point in clocking the CCD any higher than that, period. Not only is the DSP / clock circuitry not capable of working any faster, but the tape / HD-SDI also max out at 60, so it’s pointless.

Sorry to spoil everyone’s day, but it just ‘aint so! Hopefully that will kill the rumours.

    All,

While we’re squelching rumers, there will not be any new software or any new version of the VariCam at NAB this year. So if you’re saving your money to see what’s new at NAB, “Fogeta ’bout it”. And hopefully you’ll take advantage of the rebate program on the VariCam and other DVCPRO HD products through March 31, 2006. Check the Panasonic Web site.

I hope to see many of you at NAB and at future VariCamps. For a list of upcoming training sessions including the one scheduled in Las Vages around NAB time, check http://www.hdexpo.net.

    Good shooting!
