    good evening to all

please, i wish to know what is the proper sound level for my final video with sony vegas pro 8

whenever i record my music my final masters (wave @ 44.1 khz with 20 or 24 bits) have a maximun sound level between -3 – 1.7 db’s (dbfs) but i feel that my recordings does not have the loudness that commercial music cd’s have

i am still confused about loudness and sound level

i am thinking to record up to -3 db’s sound level for my videos but i really don’t know if i have to use also a maximizer vst plugin in order to give that extra loudness

my videos are from live events like festivals, fashion shows

the video sound is recorded as pcm @ 48000 khz stereo

    many thanks in advance

    Hi Katerina,
Matching the loudness of a commercial CD is not as simple as using a plug in. It involves both mixing and mastering the audio. One of the things you can do is get an audio engineer to come to your editing space and set up some plugins in Vegas for you. If you give he/she some examples of your work, the engineer can set up some basic mixing methods and templates that would cover most situations. It really depends on where the final product will be played (Youtube, Vimeo, DVD, Bluray) and what the budget is.

One thing that has an effect on the apparent loudness is compression. Probably the best way to add this is with VASST Ultimate plug-in. It has many other benefits as well, but worth the money for its audio handling when you want something “out of the box”.

thanks for your advice but i am working by myself for all my music productions since i have started doing this about seven years ago

as for the vst plugins i have all ready have finalis for sound maximizer and l ultra maximizer + from waves (old version 2008)

i will try to record my sound for video at -7 to -3 db’s to see and we will talk again

dear Phil Seymouri thank you for your kind reply

thanks for your advice for the vasst plugin but i have all ready

finalis (elemental audio) for sound maximizer and the ultra maximizer + from waves (old version 2008)

i will try to record my sound for videos at -7 to -3 db’s (dbfs) to see what will be happened and we will talk again

i have noticed that commercial dvd’s have a maximum sound level of -17 to -12 db’s which i quite low i think

    thanks

    Hi,
You need to set up a workflow of plug in chains(multiple plug ins in a specific order)
The problem is that the requirements can change depending on the source audio being used.
That’s why I suggested a lesson with an audio engineer using your own equipment. You can then get an idea of what is needed. Commercial recordings and soundtracks are mixed by multiple professional engineers (tracking, mixing, mastering) so it is not easy to get the same mix doing it yourself.
I would try lynda.com for some basic things first.

dear Colin Morris, good afternoon and i really thank you ery much for your kind reply contest of which i have carefully noted

please, i wish to explain that it is almost impossible to hire a pro sound engineer to take care about my music for film since the production is for a local charity club and i will not get any money from those people, further more the final dvd(blank media, art work and mass production) will be carried out by someone else without any paying

i really don’t know if i can post live link to my music and please if this is not allowed by the forum rules please delete the link

please, if you listen to the music you will have a better idea of what i am trying to do

the complete soundtrack is not yet finished but i have uploaded a demo just an hour ago

many thanks again for your advice

The reason I suggested Ultimate was it has templates for audio enhancement and level control built in… if you haven’t tried them, then do. They work.
Like myself and many other indie operators we are not in a position to hire consultants or hire sound studio. Nice if the budget allows, but reality has to be accepted.

dear Phil Seymour i really thank you very much for your kind reply contest of which i have carefully noted

although, please let me explain that it is almost impossible to hire a true pro sound engineer since this video project is for a local charity club and no one of us who will participate in this project we get paid

i know that it is absolutely different to edit/master for video than with music cd

during the weekend i have talked with a friend who is freelance videographer and a member at the greek Independent cinematographer club and gave me some informations regarding sound level for video/film

yes, there are international standards for sound for film and video in both pal/ntsc analog/digital

from his experience nearly nobody follow those standards and everyone is free to record at whatever sound level likes but within the follow limits :

analog recording for video/film – max -5 db’s at vu meter (i assume that he refers to ppm meter)

digital recording max sound level -15 to -8db’s (dbfs) max

maximizer plugin can be used to give a louder loudness within -15 to -8 db’s as output ceiling

if i stay within the above limits then the pressing plant that will made the final dvd mass production will arrange for any inconvinieces if any

please, you can check my soundtrack

to listen for what kind of music i am talking

please, if the forum rules does not allowed live links please delete the above url

    thanks again

    best regards
