I’m a part-time sound designer/video editor learning After Effects, Photoshop, and Illustrator. I want to work as a motion graphics artist/video editor so I’m moving to LA to start my career in commercials and television. I’ve noticed that most of the job listings require you to know a variety of different software, so I’m wondering what other software I should spend my time and effort learning. Which 3D program would you recommend if any? I see some job listings looking for people skilled in everything, including Maya, and to me that seems unrealistic and a bit of overkill. If you guys can help me that would be great and I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

While I’m in a similar situation as you (but in Mpls, not LA) I’ve asked this question on a lot of forums.

The bottom line is that I think there’s no standard for 3d. It seems to come down to whatever you’re using at the moment is THE best.

Here’s the general conclusions I’ve collated from my forum post questions.

Maya is overkill unless you move to film work.

Cinema 4d has a great connection to AE but C4d. There are studios who use it but it’s not ‘the’ standard. This is the one I chose however.

XSI is used by quite a few on PC’s (no Mac version). Had they a Mac version I probably would have gone with this. Now that I use C4d I’m glad I didn’t have that PC.

3DS Max is also right up there with XSI (probably higher) but again, no Mac version.

To end, I’ve also been told many times that if you learn one really well you ought to be able to switch fairly easily if necessary.

Good luck and if there’s really a definative answer I hope someone who has it posts as I’d like to know too. 🙂
