What software do they use for earth shots?
Posted by Paul Burgess on March 31, 2009 at 5:23 pmI would like to discover what software TV programs use when they pan and zoom so smoothly around and into the earth.
Google Earth Pro does not offer such detail without all sorts of unwanted rectangular patches
Nasa wind earth is great but I cannot get smooth his resolution video out ofit.
So can anyone point me in the right direction for the software used?

March 31, 2009 at 5:27 pmHow close of detail do you need to get? We use the NASA imagery and manipulate that in After Effects. Some of their imagery is 21000 x 21000 so you can go in pretty darn close, even in HD.
Beyond that, we use Google Earth Pro.

March 31, 2009 at 5:51 pmThe higher the resolution of stills you start with, the higher your quality when you move it around and zoom in on it. NASA photos are free, you may also try the USGS database.
The other alternative is to be resolution-independent and use a 3d CGI computer-generated model for these jobs. Some like to mix the CGI model with real texture maps from satellite or aerial photography. Clever placement of cloud layers and use of motion blur effects helps cover the transition points where one level of detail is switched to another.

I’ll second that. We just used that for a show open.
