  • What settings going from DVCPro50 -> Sheer codec?

Posted by Niklas Wikman on December 16, 2009 at 10:35 am

    I’m testing the Sheer codec.

I notice the final result (MPEG-2) does not look good, if I use Sheer YCbCr 8bf with millions of colors.
Dissolves looks crappy and the blacks seems to be somewhat washed out.

Doing the encoding to MPEG-2 and using native DVCPro50 (16:9, 576i) codec does not show anything wrong with the picture. Seems to me that I’m using wrong settings in Sheer, then.

    Any tips greatly appreciated!

    Why go to Sheer then?

Well… I was told that Sheer is a lossless codec, while DVCPro50 is not. That’s why I’m trying to use Sheer while processing (noise reducing) my footage, before encoding to MPEG-2.

What are you using for noise reduction?

When exactly in your pipeline are you introducing the sheer codec?

    Please give your whole process.

    1. Shooting with AG-HPX500, using DVCPro50@576i.
    2. Log and Transfer to FCP, still using DVCPro50@576i.
    3. Edited timeline is exported to Sheer, using YCbBr, 8b, millions of colors, PAL. All other values in Sheer left as default.
    4. Noise reduction in Video Purifier (https://www.innobits.com)
processed to and saved back in same Sheer settings as above.
    5. Noise-reduced video is then opened in BitVice 2.9 (no DVNC, 16:9 setting, all other settings left as default).

Instead of exporting to Sheer before Purifier, I’d just take the dv50 to Purifier and render out Sheer. Purifier operates in RGB (similar to After Effects) so make sure all your values are legal (between 0-100 ire) before Purifying.

    Thanks, Jeremy.

I’ll give this a try tomorrow at the office.

Yes, I know (after some testing together with Roger at Innobits) that you just can’t have illegal RGB values when processing video, even if FCP allows you to use overexposed footage.

What settings should I use when letting Purifier render out Sheer?

Oh wait, Niklas! Now I know who you are, sorry I should have realized.

With Sheer, you are going to want YUV 4:2:2 8bit PAL, 720×480.

Used the Sheer codec today, with RGB 8bf. Everything looks just fine.
(And hopefully I have good files for archiving footage as well).

    Thanks for all your help.

    Niklas
