    Hello all,

Ihave a computer with 4 HDDs connected in RAID 10 with the help of the integrated mainboard controller. Unfortunately this controller is pure crap since i’ve aready had multiple failures in the last month.
My questions is if a separate internal PCI RAID controller is better than an internal RAID controller which connects to an external storage box.
I have found controllers from these brands: Adaptec and Promise are they any good ?
I’m not looking at achieving blazing fast speeds with this controllers just having the piece of mind that the drives will not fall out on me 3 times a day.

    Thanks,
    Mike

I’d look at Promise, 3Ware and LSI controllers.

As far as Internal vs external, that depends on how much expandability you want and how much you want to spend. There is fundamentally nothing different between internal and external other than connectors.

    Hello,
in my opinion the best Host Bus Adapters are from 3ware (now an LSI brand), Promise and Areca. The Arecas often use a fan on the heatsink (that means noise and/or one more thing that can fail), Promise and 3ware are both wonderful products, with similar web applications to manage the Arrays.

If you’re going for the Promise, and you’d like to handle RAID5 or RAID 6 (the best Raid level), I suggest you to consider Supertrack family only (and not the Fastrack ones). Moreover, when you place your order, check if the cables in the box meet your requirements (I’m usually compelled to order extra cables).

    Best Regards,

    Paolo

My company deals with all of the large HBA companies. The best service from a post sales view is ATTO. You have local support and a great team that understands Mac and PC. Many of these companies base everything on PC which does not always help if you are Mac based. Please feel free to contact me ron@maxxdigital.com as we can help you with all the top brands.ATTO is your best bet.

\thanks for all the answers. I finally bought an intel raid controller. Could you tell me a program that accurately measures the data transfer of my HDDs ? I tried Iometer but I don’t know if I chose the right settings. I have to find some tutorials for it.

I am not sure if AJA Kona System test will work . I do know that the cards are working in both PC and Mac.
