What RAID card?
Hello everyone. I’m using a MacPro RAID card in my MacPro system running FCP/PrPro. There is one HD running the OS and three 1.5 TB drives in RAID 5 for media. This is my studio system which is used for 10 days a month. The rest of the time I’m traveling with my mobile edit system cutting sporting events highlights. When I’m traveling, my MacPro system is shut down. I always get an error message when I switch on the MacPro saying the RAID card battery has failed. From Apple support I learned that the MacPro RAID card is to be left on 24/7 or else the battery fails.
If I switch to either the Areca 1882x or ATTO R680 (with an external SAS drive array) would I have the same problem of the battery running out if my MacPro is switched on for only 10 days a month?

ATTO with CacheAssure is a good choice since it uses an SSD rather than a battery. Areca does use a battery and may enter a similar state as a Mac Pro RAID card after the system was off for a while.

the Apple RAID card is a piece of garbage. At this time, after years of dealing with it, anyone that debates me on this subject should be ready for a huge fight. The ATTO R680 and Areca 1882x do NOT have this issue. All the Apple RAID cards fail – the ATTO R680 and Areca 1882, while they occationally have firmware issues that need to be updated, never ever have the problems that the Apple RAID card has exhibited.Anyone that debates this is a “fanboy” of Apple, and should be ready for a verbal beating. I don’t know why there should be any fanboys trying to defend the Apple RAID card, as it is not made by Apple, but by LSI Logic. It’s a bad product.

my 2 cents, Bob & Alex are right. Areca 1882x or ATTO R680 either way, you’ll be good.
