what QT codecs are supported?
Posted by Nat Jencks on January 6, 2011 at 11:46 pmHi guys, I am trying to load quicktimes for offline reference, and have found that neither dnxhd and motion jpeg seem to work. H264, and prores both work.
I can’t find documentation about which quicktime codecs are supported. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

January 7, 2011 at 4:01 pmOff the top of my head, here’s the formats that I know work from personal experience..
(never tested PAL)If anyone sees one I missed, please add..
- uncompressed (all flavors)
- DVCProHD
- XDCam EX (and probably all flavors)
- Prores (all flavors)
- DnxHD (only tested 220 – requires $500 avid support ad-on)
- H264
- DV

January 7, 2011 at 4:38 pmThanks!
I tested animation codec which is sometimes referred to as uncompressed or “none”, and it didn’t work. Didn’t test any of the AJA flavors of uncompressed, etc.
Ended up using prores.
I take it you need the $500 avid codec package just to read avid codec quicktimes? That’s crazy!
Every other application that supports quicktime reads avid codec fine. I guess I’ll transcode DHXhd material to prores for now. Seems like an unnecessary roadblock for avid users.
Thanks!

January 7, 2011 at 4:45 pmEhh, $500 honestly not such a bad deal after they threw in that $19,000 discount for Resolve.
I’m guessing the old DaVinci probably charge $10k for that same “add-on”.Just sayin.

January 7, 2011 at 4:50 pmno, these were made on a mac. I sometimes use motion jpeg A as a codec when I’m sending to old versions of quicktime, or quicktime on linux, etc.
Prores seems to be working, as does H.264 quicktime. I guess Resolve is just a bit picky about what codec’s it supports. Weird, since for most applications, if quicktime player plays teh file, the application will also.
Thanks!
