  • What prores alternatives to use on PC?

Posted by Karel Voners on April 16, 2018 at 11:45 am

    Hi,

I’m experimenting with a new PC workstation coming form a 5,1 mac pro.

What codecs do people tend to use when exporting?

Is DNX the standard? Or are things like cineform also used in grading etc?

What are the equivalents of pores, proxy, LT, HQ etc?

DNX seems to be very well optimized for muli threading and also uses the GPU to a large degree.

    Thanks!
    K.

    Differences between ProRes and DNxHD:
(Not all, but first that comes to mind)
    Prores is VBR, DNxHD CBR
Prores is ALWAYS (at least) 10 bits, DNxHD only on the ‘x’ flavours
Prores is resolution independent, DNxHD has a flavour per resolution, and that is a limited set

Now, there is a (cheap or free) solution to get ProRes out of your PC PP, based on a trick that it hooks into the frameserver PP seems to have.

But, DNxHD is no punishment, so if you have a decent flavour, just use it.
