There’s no setting for this, closest is of course 1080 but it’s a 4:3 ratio which would fit the 640×480 project setting.

I plan on AMA linking and transcoding of course. Currently it is in prores 422. it is VHS video captures from 480 up into 1440. Final deliverable; I’m sure the director would want it in HD so he could toss it on a Blu Ray. So yes it would be 4:3 frame in an HD raster size. The audience would be seeing pillar boxes.

    You mean 1440×1080..4:3.

Use a 1920×1080 setting that matches the frame rate…29.97 most likely.

How did you end up with that? You did something wrong. 4:3 SD blown up to HD, and to retain the 4:3 dimensions, should be 1440×1080.

The closest setting Avid has to what you want is 1920×1080. Not sure how your footage will import that.

Well i didnt do anything, I was given the footage by the director. He captured it off VHS.

I mean sure you can get it to play back properly in Avid and not look distorted in the composer window, but exporting… Well anything I tried ends up squishing the footage and pillarboxing.

ANY tips you might have for me at this point I would love. I am more worried about the exporting portion of course.

Just FYI, I made a 1080 sequence and 1920×1080 raster and exported same as source and it exported correctly. Pillarboxes on the side. I am not sure why the director did this, but its something the actual editor will have to deal if it’s a problem after the director makes his rough cut. He nor I have time to deal with it at this point. If it means re encoding and then relinking then so be it.

If the footage aspect ratio is truly 4:3, then it will have pillarbox. If the content is anamorphic, then a stretch will do the trick. In cases where the footage is 4:3 – usually you want to keep all the pixels when doing an HD uprez (or transfer from film) and then deal with it as pillarbox, or a pan & scan or tilt & scan in this scenario if you want to create full 16:9. If not, then it is pillarbox. MC only knows 16:9 in HD so if you want a 4:3 file at the end of the process, export 16:9 pillarbox and do a crop in an encoding application.
