Which program does the COW staff use to create the video tutorials like Aharon Rabinowitz and Andrew Kramer? What is the program used to create the screen-capture and then the outputting to this flash file?

Read “common after effects questions” at the top of the forum, just above your post.

Congratulations!#@#&! You are the 1,000th person to post this question and so you win one of my very own exclusive Cowdog autographed doggie bowl/beer steins, filled with a day’s supply of kibble and lager. Yum!

Over to your right you will see a banner for TechSmith’s Camtasia Studio. It is what most of our leaders use.

You can also try stop-motion. Use the Print Screen to take a screen shot and move the mouse a little at a time. You can then import the sequence into AE. Then just dub the audio in afterwards.

I think that is how Aharon does it.

Camtasia is the best, thats for sure. And not because all of the features it has… i personally don’t like them. To much beating around the bush to get the job done. Its embeded flv encoder is simply most optimal i know of.

For the time being i use my own software to do that, but it is not even close to ReleaseCandidate version, and I don’t know if it ever will be.

But anyway… there are many freeware and opensource projects that do the same thing. Try google, or sourceforge.net.

Here is the link to one of many projects like that:

    Good luck

Actually, I do use stop motion, but with claymation. Everything from the mouse, to the screens, to the red circle that expands to show clicks are painstakingly sculpted by the same team that worked on the original Gumby.

Actually, I do use Camtasia. If you want a complete workflow from start to finish, you should check out my new DVD – “Internet Killed the video Star”- which covers making tutorials, in depth. Check out this article:

Well, after all the laughter has died down – the FAQ does have Camtasia as a screen capture program, but it does not provide the slick look of Andrew Kramer’s tutorials or Aharon Rabinowitz’s. Is this done with Camtasia and then exported through flash?

Can’t speak for anyone else, but in my case I use Camtasia to capture, and then edit and add motion graphics and zooms in AE. if you plan to just do simple editing, then an editing in an editing program like Final cut or premiere or vegas is more appropriate.

Ok, then you output to Flash to get all the controls at the bottom?

  • Aharon Rabinowitz

    August 27, 2007 at 3:34 pm

Nope – then you create player controls in Flash, and export as an SWF. Then you embed in a web page with a web design program like Dreamweaver. Or you can import the final rendered video into camtasia, and then export as FLV – it will output player controls and webpage – but it has the camtasia logo all over it.

Again, because there are so many aspects to this, I’ve put it all together on the DVD I mentioned – Internet Killed the Video Star – which should be available for purchase in the next day or so at https://training.creativecow.net/

Visit the flash forum for help on adding player controls to your FLV.

I would spend more time explaining this, but I am leaving the country, and am on my way out right now.

    Best,

    Aharon
