  • What PC specs/components are most important for a smooth preview window?

So I realize my PC is probably quite underpowered. Phenom x4 965, GTX 960, Western digital black hard drive (no ssd), 12GB ram.

It has done well in the past editing HD video, however I have started editing 4K and the preview window really has issues, especially when one clip fades to the next.

Now I’ve done some general research on the web about making a video editing platform, however almost every guide seems to emphasize “render times”. I personally don’t really care about this. I’m fine with leaving the PC alone for hours or overnight while it renders. My concern is just being able to work smoothly.

With a very small budget, I’m trying to figure out the most important upgrades I can make to get the preview window, and software in general to work smoothly. Perhaps just a ssd for my media files? New video card? Or is a whole new cpu/motherboard needed? I’m just not sure where the bottleneck is that is causing the preview window to lag, and what it is most dependent on.
