  • What is the secret to working with HDV?

Grettings. I have just bought a sony HDR-HC3 HDV camera. I ma just doing a few tests to work out an HDV workflow. I am travelling at the moment so only have a 15″Powerbook with 1ghz processor and 1.256 gig of Ram. I have had no problem importing HDV footage (except for breaks that it is automatically putting in at scene changes) but when I am editing I need to rerender every clip. The footage is fine within the timeline until I cut into it. I suspect that this is due to the limitations of my machine and the long GOP of HDV etc. So I brought the footage in as offlineRT-jpeg(using the cameras automatic convert to DV then final cuts DV to Offline RT setting) which worked fine, happy editing. However when I came to batch capture the selected HDV footage (having made an offline project using the media manager) it wouldn’t import. The tape would que to the first clip fine, and even play through to the clip’s end. However it would then cue the same clip again and repeat. It would never conclude the capture of that clip. Is this to do with my edit points being in the middle of the GOP image sequence. Capturuing the footage using the DVpal conversion worked fine.
So what is the secret to editing HDV?
    Sincerely
    Peter Stenhouse

[peter stenhouse] “So what is the secret to editing HDV?”

Jerry Hofmann did a complete HDV Workflow article in the Creative Cow magazine two issues ago. I believe the article is now available via the website.

In our shop we convert HDV to DVCPro HD during ingest so we don’t have to deal with HDV editing.
