  • What is the maximum pixel resolution for layers in an AE comp

I asked a question earlier about this, one of those oh my god I’m in a hurry to get it out kind of questions…

If you look at that thread, you’ll see I fixed my render crash problem by sizing down the layers I was using in my comp to under 4k.

But now I am going back and really trying to figure this out. I could swear I’ve used some ridiculously large layer sizes in AE before. So here are my general questions on this topic:

Is there a maximum pixel resolution for layers in After Effects ?

If not, is there some kind of kink with using 3D layers that are REALLY big (say above 4k) ?

Is there a specific issue with AI file imports that are really big ? (such was the nature of my problem child this morning)

I did a search on the forum for this line of questioning, but didn’t come up with any clear answers. Oh kind and knowledgeable gurus of AE, can you answer my questions ?

    Very Best,
    Bob Bonniol

I’m not certain of the current limitations but in version 5.5, it was 16kx16k but memory issues usually prevented such a tedious task.

For huge images, that result in sluggish performance, you may want to cut up the huge image into a grid of smaller parts. There was script that could do this quite nicely. You’ll have to Google for it though.

Using proxy layers will be quite crucial when working at high resolutions.

It’s also ideal to bring in the footage in a format that AE works efficiently with.

    from After Effects Help:
“After Effects supports a maximum image size of 30,000×30,000 pixels for importing and rendering files, except for PICT (4,000×4,000 pixels) and BMP (16,000×30,000 pixels). The size of image that you can import or export is influenced by the amount of physical RAM available to After Effects. The maximum composition dimensions are also 30,000×30,000 pixels.”

That said, the image buffer that is needed for a layer that is 3D or has certain effects applied to it may be larger than the pixel dimensions of the layer itself.

I’m running into a render issue as well. You mentioned buffer size. How do you find out the buffer size? Is that even possible?
