Panasonic guys say, “Don’t worry. The Varicam will not be replaced for 3 years!”

Owner’s go, “So what makes the 900 worse then the Varicam ?”

Panasonic, “Umh.. we crippled the software so they can’t change certain camera functions”

Owner’s. ” So is anything else besides software lockouts different?”

Panasonic, ” umm ya, umm umm don’t tell so and so but, the part X might not be the best coming out of area Y. It may be exactly the same but, hey it might not be. Not that I actually can be quoted as saying one way or the other.”

Utimately the rental facilties and client demands will make the final decision as to which camera (Panasonic, Sony,GV,Ikegami,JVC, etc etc survives or goes to the wayside.

In short screw the manufacturer’s hype and BS and listen quite closely to what your repeat clients, rental facilties or vendors you do constant business are talking about.

Be sure to read between the lines to filter out the hype and find the truth.

Unless I’m mistaken, the CCD array of the Varicam would cost about $30,000 to replace.

The price of the HDX900 is under $30,000.

    What does that tell you?

    Long live the COW!

It should tell us that the R and D for the Varicam has been paid for and mass manufacturing has brought economies of scale to consumers.

    Or am I that naive?

It is already known the ccd’s are exactly the same between the two. Panasonic sales guys do a wink wink nudge nudge thing about the prism block. I sort of doubt it would be worth it to develop a seperate optical block to save money. I’d guess it’s either a Varicam block or its a sdx block if the two are even different.

I was looking at the specs for the 900 and it mentioned “Optical System: F1.4 Prism System” Try as I might I can find a optical system spec for the varicam. Anyone know ?
