What is the GOP setting?
Posted by Clctech on August 3, 2007 at 7:10 pmCan anyone explain to me what the GOP setting is in the quality tab within Compressor when I’m exporting to mpeg-2? I dropped the GOP setting from 15 to 7 and I think the quality is better. What is this setting?

August 3, 2007 at 8:28 pmI’m not sure entirely but I can tell you that GOP stands for the Group Of Pictures. This setting is often used when dealing with HDV footage. 15 refers to the number of frames in a “GOP.” The more frames in the GOP the worse the picture typically. But I don’t know too much about this hopefully this helps

August 4, 2007 at 3:16 amAll MPEG based video is GOP based. HDV and DVD’s are examples of some. In each GOP or “Group Of Pictures” there is one iFrame or complete frame and all other frames in the GOp are based off of the iFrame. HDV video for example typically has an iFrame every 7 or 15 frames this is why sports and fast paced action don’t look quite as good when shot in HDV. The smaller the GOP size the better the quality of the video, but at the same time it also increases the file size.
This is what makes editing HDV footage so problematic. Whenever a cut is made in between new iFrames is made, a new iFrame must be created. Thus the long conforming process with HDV.

August 4, 2007 at 4:08 amHi clctech ,
Please open Compressor and them open (in the HELP menu) the “Compressor User Manual”.
Go to the page 140. There you got UNDERSTANDING GOPs AND FRAME TYPES.
In the page 149 you got more info: CHOOSE GOP SETTING
You got everything ther and very well explained.
Cheers,
rafael
