Stereo: will output two channels in one stream. They are designated left and right and are panned to the left and right stereo output in the master bus.
2 Channels: will output 2 mono channels one in each stream panned center and both will output equally on the master stereo bus. If you had a stereo file on one track and rendered it to 2 channel, and drop it back into the project, you would get two tracks with two mono streams, one containing the content of the left stereo channel and the other containing the content of the right stereo channel.
Dual Stereo: will output two Stereo streams. Each stream will contain a left and right channel as with Stereo. If your project had two stereo tracks assigned to two stereo buses these tracks would be maintained separately in your output. If your project had 4 mono audio tracks assigned to two stereo buses, your output would have two stereo streams with mono track 1 & 2 as left and right in one stream and 3 & 4 as left and right on the other. (note you can assign the bus outputs any way you want but this would be the default)
4 Channels: will output 4 mono streams. If you had 4 mono tracks assigned to 4 mono buses in your project they would be rendered to 4 mono streams. If you had two stereo tracks assigned to 4 mono buses in your project they would be rendered to 4 mono streams.
The reason for these options is because XDCAM EX has the potential for up to 4 audio streams that can be configured as 1 stereo, 2 mono, 2 stereo, or 4 mono streams.

September 25, 2014 at 2:54 amI was recently asked if it’s possible to upgrade the audio in Vegas from the original into some sort of surround sound. As I see it it might be possible to add rear audio tracks with general ambient sound as well as other things in the background like a train going by etc.
Thanks in advance

Absolutely! Just change your project to 5.1 Surround and Vegas Pro will add surround panners to all of the audio tracks. All you need to do is add more tracks and pan them to the speakers you want and you have a surround project that can be rendered in full surround sound.
