What is the best way to render out work to show people as a test?
Hi there
Basically every week I have to go into uni and show my tutors what Ive been doing but it just takes so long to render stuff out its ridiculous. I save them as DV PAL 48hz but it takes about 1 minute to render 1 second Id say, outrageous! Is there a way to get a good quality of video but without the painful waiting?

Set up the render settings and output module to render at half-res, 12 fps, 320×240. You can make templates for those settings under the edit menu.

Cool thanks for the prompt response again! Will the quality really be any good at 12fps tho and at such a low resolution? Is that the only way to go?

I like making a QT mov with Sor3-Low, full size, full rez and full fps (you can change these if necessary). It plays on Macs or PCs and does fine even on my 700mhz oldie. I’d go to half size before I dropped fps because I think it looks better, even viewed at Double size, but with the smoother movement of full fps. That’s just me though.

It’s always a compromise between image quality and playability. You should do a number of tests when you’re not on deadline, burn them to CD, then test them on machines at school. Save the most useful settings to templates, then you don’t have to think about it again … until somebody comes out with a better codec, of course.

Is there a way to get a good quality of video but without the painful waiting? “ As far as I know, 1 minute for 25 frames is pretty good. 1 minute per frame, not so much. That being said, frame size and frame rate are probably the only things that will consistantly save time. I also agree that Sorenson 3 is the way to go… codec wise.

whats the story with the h263(or something close to that) codec that apple were showing off recently?. the comparison movies seemed to show something about the size of hi-def, with data rate of 320-240 or thereabouts… I know it wouldn’t impact the render times (hi-def.eek) but the compression-quality seemed at a glance very impressive. has anybody tried it?

I’ve not yet tried it, but the quality is supposed to be excellent. The larger issue, I believe, is that you can only play back in QT 7 on a mac.
That makes compatibility a big problem at the moment
