What is the best way to add old MPEG2/VOB files to a Bl-ray project?

What is the best add old SD files taken from a standard SD DVD & incorporate it into a new Blu-ray disk to which I wish to add more resent footage?

I have an old DVD of when the grand kids were young that is poor quality,since most was shot on old VHSC tapes & then transferred to a SD DVD with motion menus,chapter markers etc. The original camera files are no longer available.

To this I wish to add new HD files taken much more recently taken as AVC 1080P.
I know that MPEG2 files can be on the same Blue-ray disk so it seems to make sense to at least have the newer files at much higher quality.

In DVDA I can open the old mpeg 2 files & get the main VOB files to open. In doing this I loose the chapter markers & even though I can play the first page of the old motion menus that is all I can see.

I tried importing into Vegas the original files from the DVD but it seems that this isn’t allowed. I even tried changing the VOB file extension to MPEG. This MPEG file opens & plays in several playback programs OK but when I try to open it in Vegas & try to add it to the timeline nothing happens.

Is there any easier way to get to my goal?

IMHO the best way is to… drag the vobs to the timeline and that is it. remember – you drop vobs with your film, not vts_01_0.vob nor video_ts.vob
if your video is split in multiple vobs i think you may have gaps between your vobs dropped on the timeline. so you have to to use a kind of vob2mpg application. it should join your set of vobs and delete any data required by dvd standard which you don’t need in your mpg file.

I could always use VideoReDo to combine all of the VOB’s into one & the I would have to reset chapter markers before rendering the file out to MPEG2 again. In DVDA I would then have to create a new menu.

I’m concerned that going this route might cause re rendering with a quality drop. Would this happen?

If it does then I might also consider dividing the original into a few clips at points where a little stabilization would help. Ideally the whole video needs some sharpening but I have yet to see any video where sharpening really works.

Just a follow up to the original question. Would either Vegas or DVDA allow the same or easier importing had my original been an ISO file?

it is not only mpeg2 always gets reencoded in vegas.
look here: your project is hd, your vob is pal. it must be upscaled, tho it must be reencoded anyway

I’m certain that you can have both SD & HD on a Blu-Ray disk without re rndering providing that files are compliant for each type & are on separate menu’s. Perhaps someone else would like to confirm this?
