    What is the simplest & easiest codec checker? I was hoping for a tool that might allow you to right click on a clip & have it display the clips properties.

    Thanks in advance

    I like GSpot. It not only tells you what codec is used, but it tells you if the codec is installed and will even attempt to play the file to make sure the codecs are installed properly. I’ve debugged problems with it because it shows you the DirectX filters being used and in which order.

    MediaInfo also does a nice job and gives a lot of information about the file. I don’t think either have Windows shell integration where you can right-click but you can just as easily use Open with… and run them.

    I use MediaInfo, mainly because it gives me the info I need with minimal fuss. It does have shell integration in explorer – right-click and you’ll see MediInfo on the context menu. I can’t remember if this is enabled by default, but it can easily be enabled in MediaInfo’s preferences.

    Indeed, MediaInfo is easiest and has shell integration.

    Go to Options -> Preferences

    This page (on the latest version) allows for explorer integration and even a tooltip when you just hover over a file it recognizes.

    Oh…and by the way, I typically use View -> HTML as it provides the best view of the info.

    OK, I didn’t see that. Very Nice. I like it even better now. 😉

    Never really gave any of the two (Gspot or MediaInfo) even a
    glance….But all this talk of MediaInfo has gotten me interested,
    and just downloaded it to see what its like.
