  • what is EBUS and DUBSAT?

Posted by Dan Browne on June 6, 2008 at 4:25 am

I’m over in NZ (New Zealand) and we are doing a commercial for a company. TVNZ has told us this “New commercials should preferably be supplied on either of the 2 digital delivery systems “EBUS or DUBSAT. We do however still accept Digital Betacam & Beta SP at this stage.” I know what Digital Betacam is and Beta SP, but what is EBUS and DUBSAT? Any help would be useful.

What a killjoy, David. You expect him to actually click that link and go READ it? He wanted you to read it, digest the matter, and then give him the Cliff Notes version.

Next time, do your job, David. Don’t be lazy.

    Hi Guys,

I’ve been using Dubsat since it became “nearly mandatory” delivery method for TVC playout to networks across Australia & NZ. they supply a great service be it a tad expensive when you have multiple up loads & CAD delivery per month, but other than that they’re a great mob of people to deal with, whenever there’s an issue at my end, whoever answers there phone can execute the solution with-in minutes, that’s great service in an industry when most suppliers will say, We’ll get around to it later”.

Cheers guys. I had gone to that site beforehand but it still didnt make much sense to me after reading it so thats why I decided to post the question here. It still doesnt really make sense but the advertising agency are taking care of that stuff so i dont have to worry about it. Does it actually go online on like an FTP thing that TVNZ download or something, I would have thought it would have been easier to just receive it on Digi Beta like they used to…

    Hello Dan,
You may have been out with the sheep too long.?. Drop in to Dubsat’s NZ office or simply call them they can walk you thru the process of converting your TVC to MPEG with multiplexed audio and sending the resulting clip to them via a simple FTP program on your computer , it’s a very simple process.
Firstly make contact, they will give you a log-in and password to their server,
you encode your clip to MPEG
you send it via FTP, (there are free FTP programs, or I use “Transmit” on my Mac it’s $30) my 30sec clips take about 12mins to up-load, that will vary on your net speed.
then you make the booking via their web site.

it’s very simple and is only $30, when you compare that to a Digibeta or DVCPRO50 dub plust the VTR costs and postage to the Ad agency, $30 is very cheap, and the quality is very good. Plus you can have it on air with in an hour if you need to…

If you still can’t understand the process, talk to a video colleague in your region who does use Dubsat I’m sure he will walk you thru it.

    Sorry Dan,
having been to the south island for holidays many times, I know what rivalry is between us mainlanders and our kiwi cousins, Both Our cultures go back thru many events, and our friendlyness towards each other will survive many Jibes.
I know if there was an event happening somwhere, having a Kiwi on my team would be a bonus.
I currently work with some that have come across the water and I can say they are Top guys, with a great sense of humour.

    Cheers from the bush

Usually before magnetic tapes were used for Broadcasting over channels, but now as these services are available i am not able to understand can MPEG-2 quality beat over Digibeta or HD Cam quality. The final clips which are sent to the channels are now having the same kind of quality and sharpness like they use to have when they used Tapes???
