What is “deinterlacing” exactly

I was just watching a tutorial on dealing with interlaced footage. While watching I realized I really don’t understand what is happening technically when footage is “deinterlaced”
I grasp the concept of 2 alternating fields… but as I said, I don’t technically understand what is happening when footage is deinterlaced.

It depends on how the deinterlacing is being done. You can copy the field above and use it to fill in the missing field (weaving). You can try to cobble together the missing data by blending the data from the adjacent fields (above and below). Selective blending tries to blend the fields only where there is motion from one frame to the next by frame analysis. Many compression programs such as Apple’s Compressor allow you to set the method used.

Thanks for the answers.
I didn’t realize it was that basic (turning fields into progressive frames).
The fact that the way it does it is very complex made jump to the conclusion what it was ultimately trying to achieve was as complicated.
I have another question but I’ll start a new post for that one.
