What is “conforming”?
Posted by Tony Connoly on December 29, 2010 at 2:27 pmWhen I import AVCHD clips I see a message in the lower right of the screen saying “Conforming [file name]”. Is this normal, or are my project settings off? What exactly is being conformed?

December 29, 2010 at 2:32 pmHi Tony
Premiere Pro doesn’t play the clips as they come in but converts them to its own format for use in the editing workflow. To do this, PP ‘conforms’ or if you like ‘converts’ your clips to the native format for PP. This is completely normal but can take quite a time when your clips are long. The conformed clips are then saved in your Preview Files folder (or Encoded Files folder – not sure exactly which one) ready for use next time you open up the project.
So, don’t worry, all is well :o)

December 29, 2010 at 5:56 pmTo my knowledge, “Conforming” is just for the audio, Premiere never converts any video files being imported. See this Adobe link for a clear explanation of Audio Conforming:

December 29, 2010 at 6:29 pmYou may well be right, I suspect I am getting mixed up with After Effects which uses it’s own file format for video …
Sorry for any mix up …

December 29, 2010 at 6:48 pmHi Tony
This is what I meant … follow the link
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremierePro/4.0/WS741BE3C1-41CC-4e00-BCA2-E1DC068001CF.html
I was getting mixed up with After Effects which creates its own version of MPEG files ( .mpegindex I think) so it can access them easily etc ..
Sorry for any mix up

December 29, 2010 at 6:53 pmWell that would also be news to me if After Effects was converting every video file that was imported.

December 29, 2010 at 7:12 pmHi Jeff
As I said above, I was a little mixed up with the way that AE works with the media cache files and especially the way that mpeg files are reindexed to .mpgindex files. See the following link at the bottom under media cache
https://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WS155A1BB2-BB32-4833-A079-F8396553D7B0a.html
Again sorry for the mix up and I hope this explains why I got a little mixed up … it’s been a busy day! I will hold back answering in the forum for a while …

December 31, 2010 at 7:12 pmI know exactly what you mean. I sometimes get all mixed up. It’s because we are trying to keep up with everything. So many apps so many different versions.
