sorry for the stupid question… but what’s an envelope and/or a bus and what’s the difference?

An envelope controls volume, panning, attack, decay, lots of parameters.
A bus, like its name implies, shuttles frames or audio from one routing to another. A bus may be used to redirect audio, or to split audio to multiple locations.

wow. you use a lot of terms that I’m unfamiliar with. I guess that tells me how much I don’t know. Is there a glossary of terms somewhere?

The Vegas help file is big and may be intimidating at first. I would read in my spare time, not getting much of it at first but each time you’ll understand more and it has a glossery. You are with the easiest proffesional Video editing software out there in my opinion. Try Avid or Final cut and you’ll be back real quick. Danny Hays

I suggest reading Douglas Spotted Eagle’s Book,” Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop”. It is a great resource for intermediate users. I have it next to me (Sitting on the floor in easy reaching distance.) when I edit on Vegas. There is a huge section on editing audio with pictures and examples. I would also look at some examples from other editing systems that use envelopes, they work in a similar manner and a lot of the principles can be applied to any editing systems.
