Activity Forums Creative Community Conversations What is an Editor?

I don’t go in front of the camera very often… I am excited to share this video I put together for Garden of Dreams, MSGClassroom. It is an idea I have had for a while to teach the students What an Editor’s job is, and what we do. The video will be shown in tandem with a live presentation. The live will be done before the video, and I will do the exact script (in same clothes) of the video, but will bumble through it, leaving mistakes and obvious reading portions. Then we roll the video explaining that this is an edited version of what you just heard.

Here is a link to the video… https://vimeo.com/255644756

My Dad didn’t know what I did for a living until I brought him to an edit session at CMT while he was visiting me. He thought I had selected a non creative venture and as he put it… “I thought an editor beeps cuss words and blurs boobies.” lol
I was well into my 3rd decade of video when he stopped asking me if I were still doing that video thing.

I am so glad I get to teach now. The first thing my students learn from me is this (editor) is by far the most creative position in television.

I have been wanting to do this piece for a couple years. I did it for the Kids and said, Hey this is about the best demo reel I have ever had.

I shared my reel with my students not long ago. Bless their hearts, they busted me on it looking out of date lol
Indeed it is but to be checked on it by 12 year olds is a bit humbling.

I think every editor is secretly ashamed of some part of their past year’s reel. We keep learning how to do things better or differently, and when we go back a year, or five, looking at past work, we see things that make us cringe, or wish for a second chance to do something differently… even if nobody else watching see them. That’s good, though. It means we’re still striving, still unsatisfied.
