  • What is a Package/Performance Editor?

Posted by Guy Mellitz on September 25, 2009 at 4:33 pm

I just read a job posting that asked applicants to specify whether they are a “package editor” or a “performance editor.” I have been an editor for 12 years and have never come across these terms before. Can someone possibly tell me what these terms mean?

Package editor to me means News Packages. 1 to 4 minute stories with track, soundbites and b-roll. LIttle or no music, nothing other than a dissolve or wipe transition and basic lower thirds.

Performance editor would be someone who can do a range of projects from music videos to documentaries and is also well versed in graphics programs like Photoshop and After Effects and Motion.

I can honestly say I’ve never seen it described as “Performance” editor either, but Package Editor I’ve seen.

Walter, I agree with the “Performance” description, I have seen the term “Packaging” used for someone who would prepare/finalize a show for broadcast. Adding supers, pre built gfx, bumpers, commercial blacks for output. would also prep superless & international versions etc.

I would call that a Conform, not package.

Back in the tape days, I think these terms would equate to ‘online’, and ‘offline’ editor.

Heh….I saw that on Mandy too!

Considering its for MTV 360, I am pretty sure the “package” editor is for short pieces, probably very tight and effects driven, about musical performers. The “performance” editor is probably an editor who specializes in the multicamera editing of musical performances themselves.

But who knows…I hate labels…I am an editor dammit

If it is MTV speak then ask yourself three questions.

Did you ever make a shot longer than 20 frames?
Did you ever put in a dissolve or fade up from black?
Have you ever cut something longer than 3:30?

If you answered no to all three you are a performance editor.
