what is 60p for anyway?

[Ewald Vorster] “Hi im in South Africa ok and im working with 720p footage for the first time, the only way i could capture this footage is 1080i, but now when i play back my exported 8bit uncompressed file 1 or 2 shot seem to be jerking slightly. It was shot 25 over 60 fps so im working on a pal drive.
Could this be coz im capturing progressive footage interlaced …. 720p cptured at 1080i.??
“What do you mean you could only capture it at 1080i? 720/25 is something you can capture easily, we’ve done here for several projects.
If you captured at 1080i then you would need to make sure you captured at 1080i/25 though I’m not sure if FCP will extract the 25 frames correctly as it does with the 720p material. We use the AJA Kona to do the extractions on our end.

It was a urgent project and im using a Black Magic HD deckling card and it could only pick the deck if i make my capture presets 1080i, Im also using HD1200A DVCPRO HD deck, and had to get the project out.
I manage to get the project done, what ive done was capture 1080/25 and copy my edited project to a normal pal timeline and export from there. Problem is ive lost alot of quality.I cant seem to get this deck to see my system on 720p. its just not connecting to the deck. Any suggestions, ive tried all presets that “in theory” should work.

Are your sure your tapes are 720p? What does the deck say in the front panel when playing a tape? 720 or 1080?
What is the deck System Format set to? 720 or 1080?

i use 60 frames per second when the shot use a green sreen other wise 1080p 30fps its the standard, you can also shoot at 60p and render your final file at 30p so it look “sharper” (in a good way) because you have more frames to work with, also take in mind your bitrate if shooting 60p. i have seen others use 60p if its a fast action scene or there is too much movement so 60p helps with less motion blur in this case.
30p vs 60p it´s a matter of personal preference because not everyone its used to 60p it looks “different” for the people like more “smooth” (most people it´s not used to it)
if you can, try shooting 60p and for your export use 30p, i personally do it that way…
