what happens when thunderbolt 3 comes out ?
Hi –
this is just my speculation. Everyone thought that when thunderbolt 2 came out, you would be able to build shared storage systems by just plugging in your Mac into one of the thunderbolt ports on a Mac Pro cylinder. Well, this never worked. But with Thunderbolt 3, slated possibly for 2017, this now may work.
What will your expense be to do this (because people thought that it would be “so cheap” to do this).1) you will need a new Thunderbolt 3 Mac Pro as the server
2) it is doubtful that there will be a Thunderbolt 3 switch. So if Apple in fact releases an updated TBolt 3 Mac Pro with 6 ports, one port will have to go to your disk drive array, leaving 5 connections for computers.
3) your disk drive array will have to be Thunderbolt 3
4) your client computers will have to be Thunderbolt 3
5) I will faint if I ever see a PCIe to Thunderbolt 3 card
6) Corning Optical cables currently cost around $500 each for a 20 meter cable, so for 5 computers, you are spending around $2500 in cabling.SO, if this DOES work, it’s still quite an expense. With all the “bargain” smaller shared storage systems out there, and more coming out for NAB 2016 at record low prices, even when Thunderbolt Networking DOES work, it won’t be as cheap as you are dreaming about.
